FFXIV jobs by role: make and share your own job board

Every combat job belongs to one role, and the role decides its place in a party. The game does not rank jobs against each other; which ones you prefer depends on what you play and how. The job board lets you arrange the jobs into your own groups and share the result as a link.

What are the roles?

Tanks hold the enemy's attention, healers keep the party alive and DPS deal most of the damage. The game splits DPS three ways: melee DPS fight at close range, physical ranged DPS attack from afar with weapons, and magical ranged DPS cast spells. The job icon's colour shows the role: blue for tanks, green for healers and red for DPS.

How are parties built?

A light party of four takes one tank, one healer and two DPS. A full party of eight takes two tanks, two healers and four DPS. Each role shares a set of role actions, listed under Actions & Traits for every job of that role.

How do I change job?

Equip the job's weapon and its soul crystal, usually by saving each job as a gear set and switching sets. Each job has its own level, and its job page lists its actions and traits by level, the quest that unlocks it and its soul crystal, for example Paladin.

Worked example: a board of your own

Open a board with two groups already set up: "Main" holds White Mage and Paladin, "Learning" holds Pictomancer. Rename the groups, add more, drag the remaining jobs in, or select a job and use the arrow keys: up and down move it between groups, left and right change its place inside a group. The board stays in your browser, and Copy link gives a link that opens the same board for someone else; they can keep it as their own or go back to theirs.
